Definition of an Expert

What is an expert?

An expert is someone who knows some of the worst mistakes that can be made in his subject, and how to avoid them. – Werner Heisenberg

That's not bad. I like how he defines it by knowing “the worst mistakes… and how to avoid them”.

But somehow when we got into the age of Internet marketing, the definition of expert has changed.

An expert is someone who knows more than the person they are teaching.

This has led to some of the worst behavior of Internet marketing. It leads to someone reading a few blog articles, and then creating a short video course based on what they read. Simple regurgitation.

It leads to someone having 100 courses on 100 different topics. You simply cannot be an expert at so many things. Your knowledge is a mile wide and an inch deep.

That does not make you an expert. If you've not actually done what you are teaching, but only read about it, you are not an expert. If you've not actually encountered problems in your field, and overcome them, you're not an expert.

The chances of you teaching something incorrectly is just too high. You are passing along incorrect or misleading information. If you do go down this road, you have to be willing to correct a bunch of mistakes as soon as you're aware of them.
